Roothog Radio plays the twangy, whiny sounds of steel guitar and fiddle — the kind of country music that tells stories, keeps the honky-tonk spirit alive, and champions independent artists.

What We Play

Roothog Radio is built on a love for real country music. Our playlist spans Texas/Red Dirt, Americana, Alt-Country, Honky Tonk, Outlaw/Progressive Country, Mind-Altering Bluegrass, Canadian Country, and Folk. We favor songs with the steel guitar cry and the fiddle's whine — not just songs that sing about them.

Weekly Programming

Our lineup includes the Country Fried Rock podcast — a one-hour weekly radio road trip featuring conversations with artists — and the Freight Train Boogie podcast, focused on Americana and roots music. Both shows highlight new songs from independent artists.

We dig deep into new and classic country albums. Past reviews have covered Tara Linda's Tortilla Western Serenade (June 2011), Jeremy Steding's I Keep On Livin', But I Don't Learn (July 2011), and The King Bucks' Bar-B-Que Drugs (October 2011).

RootHog Radio has been spinning authentic country sounds since 2010, bringing together the lonesome cry of the steel guitar and the spirited sweep of the fiddle. Our programming draws from a deep well of honky-tonk tradition, favoring songs that tell honest stories and keep the dance floor moving. We believe real country music lives in the rough edges and heartfelt delivery, not in polished production. Every track we play is chosen to honor the roots of the genre while championing the independent artists who carry that torch forward today.

From Texas and Red Dirt to Outlaw and Progressive Country, the station's playlist spans a wide geography of sound. Americana and Alt-Country sit comfortably alongside Mind-Altering Bluegrass and Folk, creating a blend that feels both timeless and fresh. Canadian Country also finds a home here, reflecting the broad reach of the honky-tonk spirit. The common thread is always the same: music that values substance over shine, with lyrics that resonate and melodies that linger long after the last note fades.

RootHog Radio is more than a playlist — it is a gathering place for those who appreciate the whine of a lap steel and the ache in a well-sung chorus. We skip the trends and focus on what endures, offering a listening experience built around authenticity and a deep respect for the craft. Whether you are a longtime fan of classic honky-tonk or discovering the richness of independent country for the first time, the station provides a steady companion rooted in the sounds that define real country music.
